How to Humanize AI Writing

Humanize AI Writing

The Role of AI in Content Creation

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionalizing how we write, whether it's for business, creative endeavors, or personal use.

While AI can create content quickly, and at scale, it often lacks the human touch that makes writing relatable and emotive. I've used many AI writing tools to write various pieces of work, and tools like Moonbeam, Clevopy AI, and Writecream AI , do a pretty decent job, but I have always found that I need to take the output and humanize it. There has always been the need to fact check the writing and align it to my style of writing (brand).

What is the Downside of AI-Written Content?

The current state of AI writing is a mixed bag — it has its strengths and weaknesses and the quality is dependent on the AI writing tools used.

On the positive side, a good AI tool can produce good content rapidly and at scale. Shortcomings tend to lie in the inability of AI to understand context fully and produce writing that is factually correct, with emotional depth, and relatable to the readers. For now, these are major obstacles to perfectly AI-written content,  but I do think these issues will be overcome some time in the near future.

What Does AI Detection Look For?

The kinds of things that AI detection looks for include the following:

  • The human factor: Lack of voice, tone, nuance, humor, reasoning, or even unnatural language. There is also forced vocabulary usage and grammar
  • Plagiarism: Content that may be directly used from existing information that has been copied
  • Facts: As AI only takes information from existing datasets, they can generate factual inconsistencies or unrealistic scenarios
  • Statistical anomalies: Statistical analysis may show anomalies compared to human writing, such as higher word diversity
  • Watermarking: Some AI systems intentionally add subtle watermarks to the content they generate that is invisible to humans but can be detected by AI detection tools.
  • Knowledge: Breadth/depth of knowledge may reveal an online AI software was used. For example, ChatGPT knowledge cutoff date is September 2021, so it will currently miss events and developments after this date.

How is AI-Written Content Detected?

There are 2 mains ways that AI-generated content can be detected:

  • Manual Detection: This is where the work is reviewed by humans.  Currently, with AI-written content there is a tendency of including unnatural phrasing, repetition, and stylistic differences from human-written content. People analyzing content from AI can pick up on these things and judge whether they believe the copy was AI-generated.  This kind of manual review can catch what algorithms miss but is obviously not 100% accurate.
  • Software Detection:  This is obviously where AI detection tools are used. These include:

Copyleaks AI Detector

GPT Zero

Having tested some of these to detect AI-written content, I found about 30% of the time they get the analysis wrong, so you should not totally rely on these tools to you give you a true and honest understanding of whether a piece of written content has been AI generated.

There is a revolution in AI writing tools being developed which is driving AI generated content. Similarly, the tools in the detection of AI content are evolving in parallel.  AI authenticity and questions around authorship are also increasing, so a combination of technical and human approaches is likely needed to reliably determine if text is AI-written.

I have also seen a number of tools that take the AI created text and convert AI-generated content into human form.  In my humble opinion these are not very good. I personally think there is a big difference between manually humanizing AI content versus using a text converter. If I was to convert AI-generated content to human-written content, I would do this manually as much as possible and try to make the piece of work as much mine as possible.

Just for the record, I have never used an AI text converter to convert to human-like content.  For me at least, using the text converting software raises concerns of deception, especially without transparency.

Why Should you Humanize AI Writing?

100% AI written content can have many flaws, so we know there is a need to review and humanize AI text.  Below is a list of things we should check for and the reasons why we should revise AI-produced content.

  • Authenticity: Humanizing, techniques make AI writing feel more authentic, realistic, and engaging.
  • Trustworthiness:  Audiences may be more likely to distrust content identified as AI-written. Making it seem more human can increase trustworthiness.
  • Reducing Harmful Bias:  AI models reflect biases in their training data. Humanizing the output can help remove potentially harmful biases. (but then again these biases did originally come from humans 🤪)
  • Quality: While AI can produce informative content, human writing skills are still superior in areas like reasoning, creativity, structure, and voice.
  • Personal connection:  Humanized language better allows audiences to form an emotional or personal connection with the content.
  • Market Acceptance: So far, most consumers expect and prefer content written by humans. Humanizing AI output helps it appeal to your audience.

Readers tend to connect more with content that resonates with their experiences, emotions, and perspectives. Humanized AI writing tends to be more engaging, compelling, and effective in communicating a message

As I have said many times in all my articles on AI writers. I personally use AI to give me an outline, some pointers even some high-level paragraphs but I tend to rewrite the text to make it more "me"!

How to Humanize AI Writing (Transform AI Text to Human-Like Text)

As I have said I do not use online humanizing AI text tools and instead opt to manually transform AI content into human form. Some of the ways I breathe life into AI-generated content include:

  1. Infusing Emotional Intelligence into AI Writing: This is where the writing has some emotion and is empathetic, and appealing to the reader's feelings,
  2. Using Colloquial Language and Expressions: This makes the content sound more natural and familiar to the reader, making it more engaging.
  3. Incorporating Storytelling in AI Writing: Stories are powerful tools for communication. They make content more captivating and memorable.
  4. Making use of Relevant Examples and Real-life Situations: This provides context and makes your content relatable and understandable.

Remember that practice makes perfect—the more you work on humanizing your AI writing, the better you'll get at it.

Final Thoughts

I just don't like the general robotic, emotionally devoid, and almost too-logical scripts that are the end result of using the majority of AI content creators.

If we are to use AI writing robots 🤖🤖...... we need to transform AI-generated content, not to write in volume and bypass AI detectors but more to grab the reader's attention, engage, add value, and move the reader to take action

I have always tried to manually humanize AI text vs using AI writing software.  I might still be finding my perfect writing style but I am infusing my writing with some emotional intelligence, using colloquial language, incorporating my experiences, and providing relevant examples.

There is also an ethical consideration here. Is it right to pump out 100% AI generated content that is then software humanized? In my view, it is not. My preference is to use AI writing software as a guide, maybe even a co-author in a limited way.

I tend to use AI just to give me a framework and some pointers. If I was to use these AI writers to write a majority of my article, I would want to be transparent and state that fact.  In my humble opinion using AI text converters and auto-transforming AI text into human text without disclosing its AI origin is a little deceptive. Mainly because no human writing effort has been deployed.

There is a balance to be had in using AI writing tools versus manually writing, thats is why I write the vast majority of articles with just a little support from AI.
